Pocket alternativeThe Pocket alternative that remembers what you saved
Last updated October 16, 2026
Pocket was where articles went to wait. Most of them waited forever. If you're looking for what to use now, here's what happened, what the main alternatives are good at, and where Relic is different.
What happened to Pocket
Mozilla shut Pocket down on July 8, 2025. Saved items, notes and highlights could be exported until October 8, 2025, after which accounts and their data were scheduled for deletion and the Pocket API stopped working.
What a Pocket replacement should do
- Save in one click from the browser, without breaking your reading flow.
- Handle more than articles: PDFs, YouTube videos, and the notes you keep elsewhere.
- Not turn into a backlog. A list of 900 unread links is not a library.
- Find things again when you only half-remember them.
The main alternatives, honestly
Each of these is good at something different. Pick the one that matches why you used Pocket.
| App | Best at | Where Relic is different |
|---|---|---|
| Instapaper | A clean, distraction-free reading view | Relic is less of a reader and more of a library you can ask questions |
| Raindrop.io | Mature bookmark collections, tags and sharing | Relic files and tags saves for you, and answers from their content, not just titles |
| Readwise Reader | Deep reading and highlight workflows | Relic is built for finding and reusing what you saved, across articles, PDFs and videos |
| Notion | Writing and organizing your own pages | Relic captures what you read and watch, and keeps Notion pages searchable alongside it |
Where Relic fits
Relic saves like Pocket did, one click from the Chrome extension, but it reads what you save. Every article, PDF and video gets a summary, a category and tags automatically. Later, instead of scrolling a list, you ask: "what was that piece about AI regulation in China?" Relic answers from your saves and links the article.
It also keeps what Pocket never did: YouTube transcripts, uploaded PDFs, Notion pages and Google Drive files, all in the same library. Read more in what an AI second brain is.
Coming from Pocket
There's no one-click Pocket importer yet. Two things work today: import your browser bookmarks file to bring in a backlog of links in one go, and use the extension's open-tabs save to capture whatever you're reading right now. If a Pocket import would help you, tell us on Discord. Requests decide what we build next.
Common questions
- Is Pocket shut down?
- Yes. Mozilla shut Pocket down on July 8, 2025, and exports closed on October 8, 2025.
- What is the best Pocket alternative?
- It depends on why you used Pocket. For pure reading, Instapaper. For bookmark collections, Raindrop.io. For highlights, Readwise Reader. If you want to save things and actually find and use them later, Relic AI summarizes, organizes and answers questions from everything you save.
- Is there a free Pocket alternative?
- Relic AI is free during its open beta, including the Chrome extension, automatic summaries and chat with your saved articles.
